Metallica frontman James Hetfield's first book, Reclaimed Rust: The Four-Wheeled Creations Of James Hetfield, will be published on May 5th, 2020 by Insight Editions. In the book, Hetfield opens up his garage for an exclusive tour of the highlights of his impressive collection of restored and customized classic cars.
The acclaimed singer-songwriter has enjoyed restoring and customizing classic cars into what a press release for the book describes as “magnificent pieces of automotive art.” Hetfield invites readers for the first time to dive under the hood of some of his autos through specially commissioned photography of the cars and insight from Hetfield into their creation.
Hetfield recently donated his collection of 10 highly regarded custom cars to the Petersen Automotive Museum, and was named a Founding Member of the museum in honor of his donation. The Hetfield cars will go on display in February, along with artifacts and memorabilia from Hetfield and Metallica's private collections.
Hetfield said a few years ago that he approaches building cars the same way he approaches writing music, explaining, “Building cars is always an escape. It's the same with music. I don't know what I’m gonna make. Cars are like people to me; they like love. They love to be touched, they love to be handled, they love to be driven.”
Metallica canceled its tour of Australia and New Zealand this past September when Hetfield returned to rehab for the first time since 2001 to battle a recurrence of his problems with addiction. It's not clear whether he has been released yet.
